We’re looking for a reliable, hardworking animal lover to join our team as a Kennel Assistant on weekends and holidays. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, and caring for pets in our facility.

This is a great entry-level opportunity with potential for full-time hours and advancement for the right person! Experience is a plus but not required — we’re happy to train someone with the right attitude and work ethic.

Reporting into the Practice Manager, the Kennel Assistant provides care to address the needs of patients that are visiting the practice for grooming and / or boarding. The Kennel Assistant ensures that the boarding area is clean and safe for all patients by cleaning cages, runs, and ward areas and washing laundry. The Kennel Assistant walks, feeds, and administers medication to patients (as needed and supervised by Doctor or Technician and based on confidence and experience).

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides great care for patients visiting the practice for grooming and / or boarding.
  • Ensures patients are admitted noting the client’s specific instructions to ensure a quality outcome including contact information and pick up time.
  • Accurately and legibly records information related to the patient such as feeding schedules, appearance, and behavior during practice visit.
  • Observes patient’s appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Appropriately handles patients and as needed, properly restrains hard-to-control patients.
  • Walks patients several times a day to provide exercise and time for elimination of bowels and bladder.
  • Applies knowledge of normal food and liquid requirements and as required, provides special food and liquids.
  • Ensures patients are clean and fresh smelling and have been checked by a Technician / Doctor prior to discharge; ensures patient has all personal property upon exit.
  • Ensures cages and patients are properly numbered and identified and that personal property (toys, treats, blankets, leashes) are stored in the proper areas and identified.
  • Regularly cleans, disinfects and maintain kennels, cages, runs and stalls as often as is necessary to ensure no cages or kennels are soiled and odors are not apparent. Performs general cleaning in other areas of the hospital to control the spread of disease. Washes and sterilizes water and food bowls.
  • Launders and dries towels and blankets.
  • Walks hospital grounds regularly and cleans any trash and stool material; empties trash throughout the practice and grounds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work on weekends as required
  • Previous veterinary experience preferred
  • Ability to lift patients up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients over 25 pounds with assistance

The Veterinary Assistant assists the veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assists with surgical procedures.

  • Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education.
  • Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs of the patient during surgery.
  • Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
  • Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures.
  • Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
  • Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian.
  • Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment, and lab areas; restock exam rooms with supplies. Assist other team members to keep the public areas of the practice clean; clean and maintain all medical equipment.
  • Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients.
  • Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members including client discussions, patient plans, client concerns, etc.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications

Reporting into the Practice Manager, the Client Service Representative (CSR), provides an exceptional experience to our clients during every interaction. In addition to continually engaging the client, the CSR performs practice administrative tasks such as record maintenance and appointment tracking.   • Schedules appointments for the clinic adhering to practice and Doctor preferences and ensure appropriate workflow.

  • Sends reminder notices to clients for periodic notifications; conducts re-calls to clients on a timely basis from a call back list.
  • Performs a backup of the computer system on a regular basis, as directed.

Position Purpose

Town and Country Animal Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is excited for another veterinarian to join our growing, progressive 2-doctor practice. Our experienced staff is compassionate and dedicated to client education and their pet’s quality of life. We are a primarily small animal practice; however, we also support a minor exotic/avian caseload. We have a diverse surgical caseload ranging from spay/neuter to orthopedics, and one can perform whatever procedures they are comfortable with. We are well-equipped with a full lab, digital radiography, and endoscopy, and are proud to be a Certified Cat Friendly Practice.

About the area: Hattiesburg is known as “The Hub City” because it has a centrally located depot that connects intersecting train tracks. While still an operational transportation modality in our city, the nickname applies as the cities of Jackson, MS; New Orleans; Birmingham; and Mobile are all within 2 hours of our city.
